A CIRCLE OF WORDS
On Writing and Being Enough

by Maja Apolonia Rodé

“Don’t be fooled by

the simplicity of

Here.

At first glance,

Here seems so ordinary . . .”

Hello, Dear.

Those lines were real a few minutes ago,

but now you are trying

to make a circle of words

and capture something of God

in that.

Your circles will lead nowhere

and catch nothing.

As hard as you try,

God will not fall for your traps.

Every lasso you send out

is going to come back

empty.

Let these poems instead be

God‘s love letters

to you.

Let these words wrap themselves

around you.

Let these words encircle the simple

already-a-done-deal

reality

of you

Here

now.

Every seeking step you take,

every net you cast,

every flick of

the lure

you send out fly-fishing for God,

they all lead

away

from the origin

away

from the cosmic fountainhead

of Here.

You are never going to find God

someplace

else.

You are

never going to deliver

a whiff of God’s delicious fragrance

by writing “rose petal” on scraps of paper

and throwing them into

the air.

And it’s not about

“becoming the rose”

either.

Then what is it about?

It’s not about anything.

It’s not about getting anywhere;

and it’s not about staying put.

It’s setting free

all of the “abouts”

and standing

humbly

in

the center

with nowhere to go,

nothing to do.

Nowhere to go; nothing to do.

Don’t let the unclothed simplicity

of these words fool you.

Rest here for a time

and see what

comes.

Could it be true?

Might you really be enough?

The gift of enough is what

this emptiness delivers.

Breathe that gift

into every cell

of your body.

And when every fiber is

alive with enough

rest in the fullness

of being.

There is no conclusion to this story,

no bow to tie around

a boxed-up gift

of “this”

or “you”

or “now”

or “here”

or “God.”

The end of this flowing ribbon is left untied

and ever weaving through

the unfinished

infinitely unfolding

Gift.

There is no word for it,

but

let’s call it “enough”

for now.
