Womb of Sophia Mandala

Gaze on the mandala while listening to the music. “Womb of Sophia” 1994 by Maja Apolonia Rodé

About This Visual-Musical Meditation

The presence and energy of the Sacred Feminine (Great Mother, Birth of Sophia, Womb of Creation) has come up strongly in my experience recently. And I have been amazed to see it unfolding simultaneously for many of the people in my world. I offer this image and musical recording as a reflection and invocation of that energy, and as a herald of its arrival. I invite you to gently gaze at the mandala as the music washes over you.

About the Drawing

This mandala was one in a series of four I drew in 1994 and exhibited in 1996. Her three sisters sold, while she remained, “the reject” of sorts. Patiently waiting in the basement for many years, last year she reemerged into my living space.

The day I framed it, I must have decided to display the drawing with the central triangle pointing upwards. I am not sure if I knew at the time that the upward triangle was an ancient symbol of the masculine. I named the drawing Trinity and included this quotation on the sale/display tag:

Joy is the realization of oneness —
the oneness of our soul
with the world
and of the world-soul
with the supreme love.

— Rabindranath Tagore

I like thinking-feeling that this drawing invokes the principle of world-soul-love. This continues to ring true for me, or even more so, after the great turning.

The Great Turning

The other day, as this divine feminine energy was taking a strong hold in me, I flipped the drawing 180 degrees. As you may surmise, the downward-pointing triangle is an ancient symbol of the feminine. Thus, the turn of this drawing reflects a turning in me. It feels like a natural affirmation and reflection of the divine feminine in my life and the lives of people in my world.

I wonder how the divine feminine is showing up for you these days? I imagine your reading these words is well-timed.

About the Music

From my deep communion with this primordial feminine life-source-essence, and from seeing her divine hand in the lives of the people around me, I felt moved to record a musical expression to commemorate this great turning. My steel tongue drum was the instrument to answer the call.

I offer this image + music as a meditation in reverence to and invocation of this sacred beyond sacred source of creation, which lives and moves in all of us.

If you are resonating with the vibe of the divine feminine, you may also enjoy my poem A New and Ancient Christmas Story.
